EOE ep. 307 | Coffee With Khalipa: You Have to Make to Give
February 27, 2023 | Hosted by Jason Khalipa
Good morning and welcome back to another episode of Coffee With Khalipa, where we dive into something I’m thinking about this week. Grab a cup of coffee and let’s dive into today’s topic of conversation: If you don’t make, you can’t give.
The inspiration for this came from Ava’s Kitchen, an annual fundraiser that my wife puts on to support children and families fighting pediatric cancer. All proceeds from this event benefit the Jessie Rees Foundation, also known as Team NEGU (Never Ever Give Up). Over the past 6 years, Ava’s Kitchen has raised around $2.5 million to help children and families in need.
As I was reflecting on the event, it really reminded me that giving is so important and is something that I need to continue to do an even better job of. It also reminded me that unless you make, you cannot give. I think that in CrossFit — or the boutique fitness space in general — there's this notion that if you talk about business and profitability, you don’t care about the product on the floor or changing peoples’ lives. That’s just not the case.
If you want to impact more lives, you need to be able to create a sustainable business. Let’s take a deep breath and pause for a second and remind ourselves that if you create profitability in your business, that's a great thing because then you can go do really amazing things with that money, whether it's giving to charity, paying your staff more, or providing stability for your family.
This all came to me during the after-party of Ava’s Kitchen. There was a moment where I looked around the room at everyone who bought in on this shared mission to support children fighting cancer — but they wouldn’t have been there unless they were originally making something so they could then be able to give.
If you’re a gym or business owner out there and you’ve had this idea that maybe you thought that talking about money was a negative thing, it’s not. Money allows you to provide for your coaches and enhance or expand your space, which will all lead to impacting the lives of more members. Then, as a byproduct, you could do great things for organizations you feel strongly connected to.
So, the inspiration for this week is to go out there and make as much as you can to thrive and then give. That’s what I'm thinking about this week. I’m very inspired by the generosity we saw this last weekend and I want to continue to do more and more.
I hope you enjoy these Coffee With Khalipa’s. Go back and check out the other episodes if you do. If you like them, share them with a friend and keep crushing it. Let’s go!
