Building An Effective Warm Up
May 11, 2021 | WORDS BY HARVEY MASSENBURG III
The overall purpose of the warm-up is to raise our body’s temperature and to get some blood flowing to the joints. This is the warm-up at it’s basic form but you can crank it up a notch to further improve your fitness.
Just think about it- is there is a movement like Double Unders or Muscle ups that you have been dying to finally conquer but you just can’t nail them when the workout begins? Or even worse, do you shy away from workouts with those movements altogether?
You can use your warm-ups as a plan to get ahead faster than you think. Let’s imagine for a second that you wanted to want to be able to do a Handstand without the wall.
Well, first you have to spend some time upside down. What if you spent 3-5 minutes each day practicing your handstand? You know what would happen? Well I’ll tell you! You would be on the first plane to train with the USA Gymnastics team! Just kidding, but you would be pretty strong in that position and your body awareness will be so much better than when you started. All of a sudden when you are performing movements overhead you feel so much stronger and the range of motion has improved! All for adding a goal and staying consistent!
Next time you warm-up don’t just think about it as just getting the body prep for the workout instead think of it as prepping for the next few workouts. Add a little extra to it each day and stay consistent and I will guarantee that you will see results that you will be proud of.
