EOE ep. 305 | Coffee With Khalipa: Cut Once, Cut Deep
February 20, 2023 | Hosted by Jason Khalipa
Welcome to the first issue of Coffee With Khalipa on the blog! If podcasts aren’t your thing, or if you forgot your headphones at home, we have you covered with this written version of my weekly Coffee With Khalipa Podcast, where I share my thoughts on different topics from business to family to fitness.
The topic of conversation today — and something that’s fresh on my mind — is the idea of “Cut Once, Cut Deep.” The inspiration for this came from a conversation that I had with a gym owner recently.
If you’re in business, you’ve probably heard the saying “Hire slow and fire fast.” The idea here is to hire slowly, take your time, and make sure they align with your culture and have the right skill sets. But if they’re not the right fit for your culture or don’t have the skill set you need, fire them and do it fast.
In theory, it makes total sense: Hire slowly and find the right person; fire fast if they aren’t the right person. In theory, it's like, “Oh, yeah, duh!” But when you try to apply it, it's much easier said than done.
This leads me to today’s topic of “Cut Once and Cut Deep.” Another example that’s much easier said than done. I'll share with you what I mean.
Over the years in businesses, people get put in tough situations where they have to make difficult decisions for the best interests of their business, their members, and the trajectory and sustainability for the next decade. An example came up from a gym owner who needed to take all of their members’ legacy pricing and bring it up to regular pricing. So, people who originally might have signed up for 100 bucks now need to pay 200 to have everybody at the same price for the same service.
We went through this a little bit ago at NCFIT and it was a tough decision. However, we knew that for the trajectory of our business, to be able to better support our members, and to continue to provide for our coaches, it’s a decision we had to make.
Cut once, cut deep. Just do it. Rip the band-aid off and move forward.
As a business owner, it can be hard to do. You might have multiple different things you need to get done. You kind of do a little bit, then a week later you do a little bit more, and a week later you do a little bit more — it just takes mental bandwidth. You end up exhausted by difficult conversations and difficult decisions.
My recommendation — and something I’m telling myself — is that when you’ve done your due diligence and you truly know it’s in the best interest of your business and everybody who supports you to make this decision, just cut once and cut deep. Make it happen and move on.
Again, it’s far easier said than done, but that’s the inspiration behind it. If you’re a gym owner or a business owner going through some struggles right now and some challenges, make the decision and make sure it’s the right decision. Do your due diligence, but once it’s made, make it and move on.
That’s the inspiration. That’s what I'm fired up about for this week. I hope you’re all crushing it! Make sure to check back next week for another issue of Coffee With Khalipa!
